Our Favorite Films of the Holiday Season

Happy holidays and a Merry Christmas from your friends at Original Breath Builder! We hope all of you are celebrating the season to the fullest. There are so many ways to enjoy the holidays- such as visiting family, opening gifts, playing in the snow, or roaming the Ethel M.’s Cactus garden if you’re here in Vegas. Since it’s the season of nights around the Christmas tree (and the TV), we wanted to celebrate one of these comfy traditions: watching Christmas movies! Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to festive flicks, so we’ve compiled a collection of films that’ll fit whatever the feeling is when you’re gathered together.

For those looking for a classic

It’s a Wonderful Life: This 1946 Frank Capra film is an all-time-classic among audiences of any age. Taking inspiration from the short story “The Greatest Gift,” this film has long been reverred as one of the greatest Christmas films. The story of George Bailey’s troubles leading him to realize the beauty and importance of his life with the help of his guardian angel will always be a timeless tale. It also serves as a powerful message about the immense impact that people can have on each other's lives. Though the film was not critically well-received on its initial release, TV airings would later reintroduce the film to audiences who resonated much better with it. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can find it on Prime Video and other streaming services.

For those looking for a family favorite

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: This ever-iconic film has entertained families since its debut in 1964.  Based on Johnny Mark’s song with the same name,it follows the story of Rudolp, the titular scarlet-snout caribou, and his journey to learn to accept himself. The film’s message of acceptance and kindness perfectly holds up even for today’s audience. It has also helped to affirm the legacy of Rankin/Bass Productions, best known for their signature stop-motion animation style. The simple, stuttering movements mixed with the charming character designs bring a very comforting and cute feeling to the film. Which allows it to stand out years after its initial release. You’ve probably seen this film countless times before, but we still recommend that you revisit it this season. You can find it on Prime Video, Youtube, and other streaming services.

For those looking for an unorthodox Christmas film

Robin and the 7 Hoods: Although Christmas isn’t the focal point of this campy gangster dramedy, this 1964 Gordon Douglas film can still offer some great entertainment during the holiday season. We’re big fans of classic and big band music here at Original Breath Builder and we couldn’t let this film’s collection of iconic musicians slide. Starring some of Hollywood’s biggest names, such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., the film tells the story of two rival gangs battling in Prohibition-Era Chicago. With its cast of talented entertainment icons, Robin and the 7 Hoods boasts some of the most memorable music numbers committed to cinema. Songs like Sammy Davis Jr.’s “Bang! Bang!” and the group number “Mister Booze” will be sure to stick with you till the next holiday season. If you’re looking for a change in pace from the usual festive fare, give this older flick a try.

We hope you give some of these films a chance. Whether they're already one of your favorites, or brand new to you, each will be sure to liven up the season just a bit more. From your friends at Original Breath Builder, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
